Who we Support

Human Development and Community Services

HDCS is a faith-based NGO in Nepal. Established in 1991 it focuses on three main areas of work, health, education and community development.

HDCS has many projects across Nepal, mainly working in rural regions providing services that benefit the whole community. You can find out more on the HDCS website.

Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC)

KISC was established in 1987 as a small study centre for children of mission and development workers in Nepal. Now it is a culturally diverse educational institution with approximately 220 students from around 20 different nations. Aside from the school, part of the work of KISC is KISC EQUIP. EQUIP works mostly in rural areas of Nepal, helping to raise the quality of education in schools that are often understaffed and under-resourced. EQUIP primarily engages teachers but also works with students, parents, school management committees, and the local community to encourage a mindset that everyone has an important role in improving education in Nepal.

KISC is a project of HDCS.

About Us

Transforming Health and Education in Nepal (THEN) is a small charity based in the UK that raises funds for the work of HDCS. We are made up of a group of trustees that all have an interest in the work of HDCS and experience of the work they do in Nepal. All of us resided in Nepal and worked or volunteered with HDCS and KISC for varying periods of time.

Daniel Parnell
Chair of Trustees Daniel worked at KISC from 2008 until 2018. During that time he spent four years as School Director. His wife, Becky, also taught at the school and his two children attended KISC. Since returning to the UK they have been living in Birmingham.

Steve Francis
Steve is the treasurer for THEN and was at KISC from 2017 to 2020 as Head of Finance, supporting the finance team during a building project. He has also served with SIM and was previously in Thailand and Zambia. After 27 years overseas he has now settled in Eastbourne.

Andrew Kohn
Andrew worked at KISC from 2004 until 2009, including a period as Secondary Principal and overseeing two sight moves. He returned in 2018 to help the school move to its current site. He is still connected to projects in Nepal, such as building toilets for rural schools. Andrew and his wife, Kate, run three small cottages in the Lake District, otherwise they spend their time on grandparent duties.
