Human Development and Community Services

Human Development and Community Services (HDCS) is a faith-based and homegrown Nepali Christian NGO that prides itself in providing compassionate care and uplifting the lives of the impoverished, neglected, and destitute in remote parts of rural Nepal.

HDCS leadership promotes Christian values across their projects and specifically highlights the virtue of service to others which they see as their duty. When you read stories from the field you will be touched by the impact through even the smallest of efforts.

The HDCS story is closely linked to the personal journey of its founder, Dr. Tirtha Bahadur Thapa. At the tender age of 15, he experienced the tragic death of his father due to a lack of basic medical services, which imparted in him a vision and desire to bring change to rural communities of Nepal. Motivated by
his vision, at the age of 16, he left his village and moved to Kathmandu. After many years of hard work and struggle he established HDCS in 1991 as a non-government, non-profit, and faith-based NGO to bring justice and transformation to the poor and marginalized.

At the very beginning, the work of HDCS started through social and community development programmes such as providing safe drinking water, non-formal education, and relief provision, as well as building suspension bridges in remote rural areas of Nepal. Presently, HDCS serves with its focus on the areas of health, education, community development, and disaster management.

HDCS aims to improve the quality of health services and education facilities for impoverished communities and increase access to quality health care, education, and livelihood opportunities for the poor and underprivileged without discrimination.

Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC)

KISC was established in 1987 as a small study centre for children of mission and development workers in Nepal. Now it is a culturally diverse educational institution with approximately 220 students from around 20 different nations. Aside from the school, part of the work of KISC is KISC EQUIP. EQUIP works mostly in rural areas of Nepal, helping to raise the quality of education in schools that are often understaffed and under-resourced. EQUIP primarily engages teachers but also works with students, parents, school management committees, and the local community to encourage a mindset that everyone has an important role in improving education in Nepal.

KISC is a project of HDCS.
